Cleaning up after an SC-1000 Spill

Overview

Chemicals spill from time to time, and this procedure is how to easily clean up Orenda SC-1000. SC-1000 is a thick liquid, similar to syrup, and trying to wipe it up is futile. Soap and water also do not work well, but fortunately, a customer of ours accidentally discovered a very easy way to clean it up thoroughly.

You will need:

  • Paper towels
  • Patience and/or something else to do for one hour or two

Steps:

  1. Move any items that are close to (or in) the spill zone, and remove them from the area.
    • If items were touched by the spill, set them on two layers of paper towels away from the spill.
  2. Cover the spill  with two layers of paper towels. The first layer will soak up much of the SC-1000, then lay the second layer of paper towels over the wet layer.
  3. Press down so the top layer absorbs enough SC-1000 to hold it in place.
  4. Wait one hour.
  5. After one hour, pick up the paper towels, and the spill should be removed and evaporated.
  6. Discard paper towels.

How to Prevent SC-1000 Spills

Always use caution when handling pool chemicals. While SC-1000 is NSF-50 certified (nontoxic, nonhazardous), spills can cause damage to cardboard boxes and other items that may get soaked. Be sure to securely close the lid of each bottle after use. If you are pouring SC-1000 from a 5-gallon, 15-gallon or 55-gallon container, double-check that the spigot being used is securely fastened and threads are wrapped in teflon tape to prevent leaks. If using a manual pump, go slowly to avoid overflow. We strongly recommend pouring in an area that can contain spills, which makes cleanup much easier and less urgent.

Additional Notes

SC-1000 is a viscous liquid that will become sticky if left on the floor. It is important to clean up any spills while the product is still wet. Cleaning SC-1000 after it has dried is much more difficult, so act quickly. Do NOT use PR-10,000 in the cleanup process. Use only dry paper towels.
